Sumida Farm
This is a farm right in the middle of urban development, next to Pearlridge Mall and Kam Highway. They grow watercress, a type of lettuce, on 10 acres of land. The system is a modified chinampa farming system where water canals are used to provide water and nutrients to the baby plants. The land has a continuous flow of water from the mountains that helps create the shallow canals.
You can't see them in these photos, but the workers wear tall boots to wade through the canals, and they walk on the bricks that form pathways. Traditional chinampas have deeper canals, and narrow boats and canoes are used. Because this is an Asian family, there is probably a more appropriate Asian term than the Spanish "chinampa" term, but I don't know it.
It is great to see this type of farm prospering in the middle of the city. Flanked by shopping malls, streets, restaurants, and parking lots on each side, this farm is flourishing as it provides locally grown watercress to the residents of Hawai'i. No watercress is exported; it is only sold to local grocers, restaurants, and hotels.
These pictures aren't up to immense photographic standards, but it was exciting for me to see things in action that I had learned about. This post is for you, Martha!! And my fellow Eco-Agers :-) Thanks guys xoxo
