OMG it's been forever since I posted a blog! I'm SO behind! The big news is that the business closed at the end of 2016, due to our upcoming move to Korea. It was a tough choice to make but it's the best one at this point in our lives. Life overseas will be complicated enough, much less having the business. I will continue to shoot creatively and submit for publication, but there will be no booked sessions with paying clients. I hope you can understand that and thank you for your continued support!
Here's one of my recent publications that came out in November that I just never got around to posting. I love it because it is the free spirit of youth that speaks in these photos. She is boldly satisfied with her style and has the confidence to get what she wants without being brash. She is a woman of many talents and experiences and can blend with any crowd at any event. She is the midtown woman.

Valerie is the sweetest soul imaginable! She is open to any ideas and has such an adventurous spirit! So when I sent her some photos of a few bohemian looks I wanted to shoot, she was down! We coordinated to shoot at Red Rock Canyon but of course, as Colorado would have it, rain clouds started rolling in just as we got to the top of the rocks and started on the first look. To play it safe, we started scaling back down the mountain and BAM. Rain stops! So we continued. And created magic. And more magic. I love the texture and inspiration found all over this place! Well there you have it, another successful shoot in the mountains of Colorado :D

So I found Viktoria through a fellow photographer friend who just raved about what a wonderful woman she was! She was so right! From the moment we sat down to go over shoot ideas, clothing, and details, I just knew she would rock whatever theme we decided on. I had just got some gorgeous designer dresses and when Viktoria tried them on, it was like these dresses were made for her. I could not believe how well they fit and the style just suited her personality so well. We had our theme and wardrobe, now we just needed a makeup artist and location! I had heard about the Paint Mines from a local photographer group who meets out there for stargazing photography (which would be SO much fun!) I took a short daytrip out there to see what it looked like..cool place! It was perfect. If you ever get the chance to go out there, do it!! Gorgeous place for a short little hike through a beautiful natural space.
We booked Catie Hill for makeup and she is excellent! Super professional and on point with color and consistency. We went for a bohemian fashion feel and the chosen looks totally set the pace. From the Diane von Furstenberg dress to the printed pattern One dream | One wish pants, the look came together flawlessly. I submitted them to a magazine and got them published as well!

The beauty of my clients never ceases to amaze me. It's funny when you first meet someone and they take their place in the makeup chair to begin their pampering session, how different they become as they are transformed. As a (primarily) women's photographer, I don't always know my clients before photographing them, so when I begin a session, I watch this beautiful woman find her confidence and grace in herself as she starts to envision her the way I do; as this gorgeous person worthy of showing how happy she is with herself, her body, and her current place in this world, whether that's an employee, a mom, a caretaker, a spouse, or a friend. Maybe she is all of these, or maybe she is still finding her way. But I do know that she is amazing, and her accomplishments are worthy of being celebrated. The weekend I shot these, I was so sick, I almost cancelled it. I felt like death and all the vaseline and tissues could not stop my nose from the red and raw that set in. I didn't cancel because there were 3 other people involved in this set and rescheduling because of my viral woes was just not an option. As gross as it probably was (SO sorry, friends!) I trudged through and came out the other side with some of the coolest images I've ever shot! This team was phenomenal and so creatively open to anything; I loved the ideas and collaboration we all came up with! We shot these literally on the side of the road by the mountains. Thank you ladies for putting up with my sickness and tissues that day! And for all your hard work!! It paid off in so many ways! I present you with.. Soul Unhinged.

Funny story about these images. This entire set was almost ruined by a massive downpour and lightning storm! So we made the decision to drive all the way across town and find somewhere that was dry. Holy Denver traffic, batman! I didn't realize how bad it was..we were so tight on time that we hustled through the looks and nailed the shots we wanted. And wow, what a beautiful result!

I really hate blogging. I can't for the life of me sit down and type out what the heck I want to say. Or how to start it. That's probably the most awkward part. So here goes for my bit on this set of images, because they're super fun and I am so tickled that they got published!
I love shooting people with personality. People who are completely different than me, people who are interesting and have something to bring to the table. When Ryder first contacted me, I was wowed by her presence and skill in front of the camera. I loved her portfolio and we set a date for the last night she was in town. As our conversation progressed, we decided on shooting a natural fashion outdoor set with a few vintage pieces she had. I happened upon this gorgeous yellow jacket, also vintage, while at the thrift store and it totally fit the theme, so we used that as well. And WOW. I think that jacket was made for her. See for yourself!!

This is yet another adventure set with my muse, the one and only Bethany. The outfit is fun, the makeup and hair are spot on (thanks Ciara!) and the location was bangin'. Why have these been in the archives for so long? Because everything happens in its due time, and now is the time for these! I am feeling far more drawn to fashion and inspired by all kinds of bits of the fashion world, even though I am the least fashionable person you probably know. One crazy idea. Two photographers. Three A.M. wakeup. Four outfits. SUNRISE AT THE DUNES!! To say that I had weird dreams the night before this shoot is an understatement. And as tired as I was when I got home, I am DYING to go back! Nothing compares to the energy and creative draw from a place like this.
We unloaded all our stuff and the glorious sun started to come up. It was freezing! Our model, Reghan was such a trooper though, and bundled up to keep warm during lighting changes and between shots. Thankfully, Katie brought hand and toe warmers, such a lifesaver! Outfit one, change. Outfit two, change. Break. We were hustling because it was so cold! Eventually it warmed up to the point we were sweating and it was 10am and time to go. Long drive home, but WOW. All three of us were thrilled with the results of the morning.
I am finally getting around to blogging these and am super excited to present you with Deserted, featuring model Reghan Avery, with hair and makeup by Katherine Gaulke, and wardrobe provided by myself and S&K Custom Clothing in Denver, CO.

Let's revisit a time when life was easy, the breeze blew around us, and we galloped in the sand like carefree ponies! The sun on our shoulders, the water beckoning to us...the urge to dance in the waves completely distracting us from any worry that would threaten to steal the moment!
But wait. Shoots on the beach aren't like that.
Rather, I am hunkered down over my camera, straining to see the screen, pulling my hoodie around my head to ease the bright light. We are focused, tending to our model, ensuring the light is in the proper spot, powdering the nose, shaping the dress in just the right direction. This is not a worry-free moment in the least! So much is happening! So much to perfect and watch out for! Time is short! We can rest easy at the beach another day! We've got work to do!
And yet, in the harshest of conditions, beauty emerges... like the most graceful of butterflies, she glides, encompassing our desire of a lazy beach day on the water. That longing to feel the warmth of light and cool of water at the same time, it is here. Even when we are working hard.
We notice. We crave the beach.

Turns out she is not much of a morning person!

Shooting these photos was a labor of love for both of us. Somehow we managed to drag our butts out of bed for the awful sunrise hour, which is really so lovely. I just wish I could have that kind of light at 10am! As much as I want to whine about getting up early, it was SO WORTH IT. See for yourself!
The mermaid references came after I did the initial Facebook sneak peek. No actual mermaids were harmed in the making of these photos :)

Either way, I'm glad we had the chance to take some photos here. These photos are from the archive, and have not been published before. They are indicative of a time in my life when not a lot made sense. When the world felt like it was literally going mad. Between horrific world events and the way things were panning out for me personally, I had felt a storm cloud hovering. I don't like asking the "Why?" question, because that never helps, and only leaves you frustrated. Instead, it helped me embrace faith.
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. Luke 22:32
I don't intend to sound preachy. Faith is the one thing that is real to me, that no one can take away from me. Whatever you believe, even if it is different from me, let your faith not fail you. Don't get caught up in the bad, the ugly, the things that drag us down. Smile, lift someone up with your words, buy that person their coffee or lunch. Take from this, what it means to you. And live it well :)
Gina is an actress in the Philadelphia area, starting her career in 1999. She has appeared on stage and in film productions, and is currently filming A Man Possessed. We caught up with her while she was on vacation and taking a break on Oahu :)

We gathered up our bags, suitcases, and gear, and headed into the forest. We braved the mosquitoes, bugs, and humidity of the Pali jungle and came out alive, with the feeling of artistic accomplishment that only a nearly spontaneous shoot can provide. Not unscathed of course.. I am covered with bug bites! Hmpf...
This custom-made costume dress (all except the corset and feather mohawk) was created by Xylena Strange of XyLie Designs, and they take custom orders from clients, whether it's a costume, gown, or accessory. I don't believe this particular dress is for sale, but if you ask, she may make you a new one!
The feather mohawk, named the Vampire Queen, was designed and created by Michelle Curiel. She also takes custom orders and will create a mohawk to fit your needs and style. Check out her Etsy shop and support local designers!

I first met her at the Lujuria Fashion Show in November, and was just taken by her professionalism and ridiculous talent at modeling. Yes it took that long for us to come together, coordinate schedules, and finally get to shoot! The concept was simple; lifestyle fashion. Meilii had these great pieces she purchased from Barrio Vintage, and added some accessories to boot. We even got to use one of her mom's vintage straw hats :) but you'll have to wait to see those!
Hair and makeup was made complete by the ever awesome Natily Taguding. Girl's got skills, no lie. Then we hopped in the car and road tripped up to North Shore for an afternoon of camera fun and geeking out over yummy light! Ok, that was just me. Poor models don't know what to do when I'm jumping around like a crazy person because their picture just turned out so fantastic that all I can do is shriek! There are times I can contain it and act normal, but..not too often.
Meilii's shoot had both things: epic light and perfect posing. Like, I didn't have to tell her anything! When a model knows her face and body so well that she just floats like an angel around the location and the great light, it is heaven for us togs. And her EYES! Like oceans of diamonds. Ok you get it.

Luckily, I have no shame anymore (the joys of growing up!) and said, "I'm gonna go talk to her. Be right back!"
If you know the me that I've become, you know that I really just don't care anymore what people think of me. I have zero shame when it comes to talking to far more attractive people; they use to intimidate me a bit when I was younger because, you know, what do you say to people that won the genetic lottery? Surely, they've looked in the mirror since birth and know what they've got going on. Don't they have confidence and class just oozing out of them!? YES! But also, experience has shown me that they are probably just as uncomfortable, nervous, or even shy as me.
So what do I have to lose? Nothing, really. Like, what's the worst this perfect person could do, snub me? Well, alright! (Because that's never happened before.. haha)
Folks, this is how you approach gorgeous people. "Hi! You look awesome and gorgeous tonight, how have I not met you before? I told my friend I had to come talk to you, can I take your picture!?"
This would be the moment I have to convince them that I really AM a photographer (pulls out phone with portfolio). Good things ensue when said pretty woman gasps and loves what she sees! We chat about shoots, clothes, and modeling, and exchange fb info. At which point I must return to my friend, as he is on his 7th drink and needs help finding his pants (just kidding, it wasn't that bad).
We set up our shoot date and gathered some awesome team players for the look of this set. Shot on a warm sunny day on Oahu (mad props to whoever can figure out what date we shot on, with just that clue, haha).

This set of images is based on the song by Marie McKee. It is raw, emotive, explosive. My vision was made complete with Jadyne as model and Erica Elisha as the makeup artist. Besides the tea cup collection, Meredith is also a connoisseur of pinup/rockabilly/retro wear. Her wardrobe is a step back into a time when our world was a different place; when tv's only had 3 channels (and you had to get up to change it!), our devices didn't own us, and perceptions could not contain us. This time frame had its own limitations, drawbacks, and benefits. As a twenty-something, I can only look back and wish that I had known my grandparents in their time. Shooting this concept helped me reflect on a world far different from my own.

I love this style of raw, minimalist imagery where a fragment of a person's spirit is captured quickly, where the ephemera of the moment might wisp away just as quickly as it came.
Suzye has always made me feel free and lighthearted; we had an awesome time sharing beer and stories with some friends at Elysian Fields in Seattle on a crisp and cold February evening.

This event was held at the Capitol building on February 9th, to raise awareness of our plastic bag usage. Currently, SB2511 is being debated to decide the future of a plastic bag fee in Hawaii. The bill proposes that a fee be imposed on all single use plastics bags from retailers, unless the customer brings their own reusable bags. More info can be found here on the bill and here for the plastics event at the Capitol building.
This is a decision we can make for ourselves. It isn't too expensive, and it doesn't take much time. Get a few reusable bags and leave them in your car; grab them on your way into the store. Change your thinking and change your mind; it is the only way you will change your life.

So... trying to get there in time for sunrise proved a problem because I took the wrong road twice, and then I couldn't find the trailhead (it was dark!!). And I stopped alot to take pictures and rest. It was hard; every step is worse than the last. But I made it!! If I can do it, so can you!

You can't see them in these photos, but the workers wear tall boots to wade through the canals, and they walk on the bricks that form pathways. Traditional chinampas have deeper canals, and narrow boats and canoes are used. Because this is an Asian family, there is probably a more appropriate Asian term than the Spanish "chinampa" term, but I don't know it.
It is great to see this type of farm prospering in the middle of the city. Flanked by shopping malls, streets, restaurants, and parking lots on each side, this farm is flourishing as it provides locally grown watercress to the residents of Hawai'i. No watercress is exported; it is only sold to local grocers, restaurants, and hotels.
These pictures aren't up to immense photographic standards, but it was exciting for me to see things in action that I had learned about. This post is for you, Martha!! And my fellow Eco-Agers :-) Thanks guys xoxo
